Accessing remote data
Note
Assumes you are connected with VPN or directly via ethernet to the ITB.
Warning
Please disconnect the remote drive before disconnecting the VPN (or the network connection). Otherwise, your computer can be more prone to crashes or does not shut down properly.
Linux (todo)
From the file manager connect network smb://dataserver.itb.biologie.hu-berlin.de/
.
Warning
If you get a connection error and your operating system is Debian 9 or older (or older than Ubuntu 18.04), then you need to change the default samba version.
Edit the file /etc/samba/smb.conf
(perhaps with nano: sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
) and add under the section [global]
the line
client max protocol = SMB3
Windows (todo)
In Windows explorer, enter \\dataserver\
as the location.
macOS
In the Finder, go to Go
→ Connect to Server …
(or simply press ⌘+K). Enter smb://dataserver.itb.biologie.hu-berlin.de
and connect.
Creating a short cut
To create a short cut for easier access, you can either hit the +
icon in the ‘Connect to Server’ interface and easily access it with ⌘+K, or you can drag and drop the share to the Finder’s side bar.
